White Sox Beat Guardians 4-3 to Take 2-0 ALDS Lead, One Win From First ALCS Since 2005

Chicago won its fourth straight postseason game, beating Cleveland 4-3 in Game 2 of the AL Division Series behind a go-ahead two-run double from Braden Montgomery and 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief from Sean Burke. The series shifts to Chicago for Game 3 on Wednesday.

The Chicago White Sox are one victory away from the American League Championship Series. Chicago beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Monday in Game 2 of the AL Division Series at Progressive Field, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, according to Reuters.

The win was Chicago’s fourth in a row to open the postseason, all of them on the road, and it left the club a single win from its first ALCS appearance since 2005. Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Rate Field in Chicago.

A three-run sixth inning flipped the game

Cleveland scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning after an errant throw by reliever Sean Newcomb allowed two runners to score, according to Reuters. Chicago got on the board in the fourth when Munetaka Murakami singled home a run.

The decisive rally came in the sixth. With two runners aboard, Braden Montgomery lined a go-ahead two-run double, and Chase Meidroth followed with an RBI single to push Chicago’s lead to 4-2. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 over five-plus innings before departing, falling just short of the franchise postseason strikeout record, Reuters reported.

Reliever Sean Burke steadied Chicago with 5 1/3 innings of one-hit work, retiring 13 consecutive batters at one point. Cleveland pulled within a run in the eighth on an RBI triple by Jo Adell, but Grant Taylor closed out the game to record his second save of the series. Cleveland has now scored just three runs across the first two games of the series and must win three straight to stay alive.
