The Philadelphia Eagles placed starting quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve Saturday afternoon because of a superficial blood clot in his left calf, the team announced. The move sidelines Hurts for at least four games, and the team has not set a timeline for his return.

Hurts will miss games against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants. The earliest he could return is Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, after the Eagles’ Week 10 bye, when the team plans to reevaluate his health, according to ESPN and NFL Network reports. The reports also said the decision followed consultations with several doctors and experts.

Blood clot found after Rams game

Hurts hurt his calf when he was cleated in the Eagles’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4. Team medical staff found the superficial blood clot during an ultrasound in London on Oct. 10 and cleared him to play the next day against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he threw for 220 yards and one touchdown in a 19-17 loss. A follow-up ultrasound Wednesday evening showed the clot had moved, and the Eagles ruled him out for Week 6 on Thursday.

The team said Hurts’ “health and safety are our highest priority” in a statement released Thursday, adding that it had been in contact with the league office about the matter.

McKee to start against Panthers

Backup quarterback Tanner McKee will start Sunday against Carolina, his third career start. Rookie Cole Payton moves into the backup role, and the Eagles signed Joe Milton off the Cowboys’ practice squad. The team also signed running back Jaydon Blue to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and elevated linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby and safety Cole Wisniewski for the Panthers game.

Hurts, 28, has thrown for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions in five games this season, completing 57.8 percent of his passes. Philadelphia is 2-3 and has lost three straight games.
