An NYPD officer shot an armed woman inside a Queens home late Friday night after officers answering 911 calls about a break-in and stabbing found four people with stab wounds, police said.

Officers were sent to a home on 149th Street in Jamaica, in the 113th Precinct, after multiple 911 calls reported a break-in and a stabbing. The first report came in at 9:38 p.m., according to the New York Post, and officers arrived at about 9:44 p.m., NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said at a preliminary briefing early Saturday.

Officers knocked on the front and rear doors for several minutes without an answer, Rivera said. Two men then appeared at a second-floor window. One, visibly injured, told officers his uncle had stabbed him and was downstairs, keeping him from coming down to unlock the door.

A woman appeared at a third-floor window, said she could not get downstairs, and threw a set of keys to the officers below. Officers used the keys to open a rear door and forced open a second door as they heard screaming inside.

Confrontation in a third-floor bedroom

On the third floor, officers entered a small bedroom and found three people tangled together on the floor: one man sitting, a second man on top of him, and a woman on top of both, Rivera said. When officers ordered them to put their hands up, the three separated. Both men complied, but the woman pointed across the room with her left hand while keeping her right hand down, then moved toward the officers holding a knife.

When she came within several feet of the officers, an officer fired, striking her, Rivera said. Another officer deployed a Taser, and officers recovered the knife.

Officers carried the woman downstairs and gave her emergency medical aid before she was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition. Four people in total had suffered stab wounds: the woman and three men. One man was taken to Jamaica Hospital, and the other two were taken to North Shore University Hospital. Several officers were also taken to nearby hospitals for routine evaluation.

Detectives recovered two knives from the scene, and the incident was captured on police body-worn cameras, Rivera said. Police do not believe the woman who was shot was responsible for the home invasion or the initial stabbing that prompted the 911 calls, and Rivera said the people inside the home are known to each other. Investigators are still piecing together what happened before police arrived, and the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is handling the investigation.
