One person was killed and eight others were injured in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night after the 85th Magic City Classic, Birmingham police said.

Police said shots rang out shortly after 7:50 p.m. Saturday near the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, during post-game celebrations outside the stadium. The shooting came after Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31-28 in the annual rivalry game, which drew thousands of fans to Birmingham.

Mayor calls shooting senseless violence

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said in a statement Saturday night: “There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration.” He added, “Tonight, as a family, we grieve,” and said the city would press for swift justice for those harmed at the event.
