Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Agree to ‘Energy Ceasefire’ Effective Immediately
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate halt to strikes on energy infrastructure — though neither Kyiv nor Moscow has publicly confirmed any deal.
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” halting strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure effective immediately.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote in a social media post Sunday morning. “Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”
The claim drew immediate skepticism. There was no immediate confirmation from Kyiv or Moscow, according to Reuters, and Ukrainian officials told CNN the announcement came as news to them. A source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine “will agree if Russia does,” and another Ukrainian official said of Trump’s post, “We just read it as you did.”
A fragile opening
Earlier Sunday, Zelensky himself signaled openness to such a deal in an interview with ABC News. “OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this,” he said. “Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attacking your diesel. And I think it’s fair, fair deal.”
The announcement follows a tumultuous few days. On Friday, after a 90-minute call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump unveiled a controversial deal to buy Russian diesel — 300,000 tons immediately, 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons afterward — a move Zelensky called a betrayal. On Saturday, Trump said it was time for Ukraine to “get a new leader who can make a deal.”
What happens next
CNN said it has reached out to the White House and the Kremlin for details on how the agreement was reached and what comes next. It was not immediately clear what led to Sunday’s announcement, and both sides have broken prior ceasefire commitments in the war. Russia had carried out strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure while Kyiv had been hitting Russian oil refineries, attacks the Trump administration blames for spiking U.S. diesel prices.
