Commanders and Giants Squander Overtime Chances in 27-27 Tie
Jameis Winston threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to erase a 14-point deficit, but neither team could finish the job in overtime as the Giants and Commanders played the NFL's first tie of the 2026 season in a rainy 27-27 game.
LANDOVER, Md. — Jameis Winston threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to wipe out a 14-point deficit, and the New York Giants escaped with a 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders on Sunday — the NFL’s first tie of the 2026 season.
Both teams had chances to win in overtime. The Giants (3-1-1) drove inside the Commanders’ 25, but Cam Skattebo fumbled and Washington (1-3-1) recovered at its own 23 with 1:55 remaining. Jayden Daniels completed three passes and broke off a 16-yard run to move into field-goal range, but with 12 seconds left, Daniels scrambled up the middle and time expired before Washington could stop the clock.
Winston finished 33 of 54 passing for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Isaiah Likely caught 11 passes for 94 yards and two scores, and Malik Nabers had 11 catches for 121 yards, including the game-tying 17-yard touchdown with 1:43 left in regulation.
Daniels, returning after missing two games with a dislocated left elbow and playing with a brace, completed 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards and ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
A fourth-quarter collapse
The Commanders appeared in control after Daniels’ 26-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion made it 27-13 in the fourth quarter. Winston answered with a six-of-eight, 75-yard drive, capping it with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Likely on fourth-and-8 with 7:20 remaining.
After the Giants forced a quick punt, Winston drove New York 10 plays down the field and found a leaping Nabers for the tying 17-yard score. Earlier in the third quarter, Winston had hit Likely for a 3-yard touchdown after a pass interference penalty negated a goal-line interception, leaving New York down 19-13.
How the lead was built
Washington opened the scoring on its first drive when Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran up the middle and cut left for a touchdown, though Drew Stevens missed the extra point. Dominic Zvada answered with a 51-yard field goal, and Stevens added 28- and 40-yard kicks to give the Commanders a 12-3 halftime lead after Washington recovered a Winston fumble at the Giants’ 27 late in the half.
Zvada’s 56-yard field goal pulled the Giants within 12-6 midway through the third quarter before Daniels’ 38-yard touchdown run pushed the lead back to 19-6.
