Cardinals Finalizing Trade of Marvin Harrison Jr., Making Him Inactive for Week 5

The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a deal to trade Marvin Harrison Jr., making the former No. 4 overall pick inactive for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Detroit Lions.

An empty American football stadium at dusk with the field lit by floodlights.

The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a deal to trade wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., ending a tenure that never lived up to its billing, according to multiple reports on Saturday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Harrison’s time in Arizona is over. The Cardinals do not yet have a trade partner, but Harrison is set to be inactive for Sunday’s Week 5 home game against the Detroit Lions while the team works to complete a move. The Houston Texans are reportedly one front-runner in the pursuit.

What Arizona will get in return remains unclear. One report suggested the Cardinals’ asking price was a second-round draft pick, with compensation on the second day of the NFL draft — a second- or third-rounder — appearing most likely. That would be far below the investment the Cardinals made when they took Harrison with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

A generational prospect who never took off

Harrison arrived in Arizona touted as a generational prospect after a decorated Ohio State career that finished with back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons, with unanimous All-American honors both years. His rookie season offered flashes: 62 receptions for 885 yards and eight touchdowns.

But consistency never came. His second season was derailed by injuries — an appendectomy and a foot/heel injury limited him to three appearances over the final eight games — and during his absence Michael Wilson emerged as the team’s WR1. This season, under new head coach Mike LaFleur, Harrison managed just five catches for 85 yards and one touchdown on 12 targets through four games, including a Week 2 outing with zero receptions.

Throughout it all, both the team and Harrison publicly dismissed talk of trouble. When asked this past week about trade rumors, Harrison said: “Truthfully I pay it no mind. I’m only focused on Detroit, helping the Cardinals win football games.” But he had recently hired Athletes First as his representatives after serving as his own agent during his first two seasons — a move that portended change.

Another miss for Ossenfort

The trade also raises questions for general manager Monti Ossenfort, for whom Harrison was a marquee draft selection. In his four seasons leading the Cardinals, Ossenfort has struggled to land foundational pieces, including a 2023 move that saw the No. 3 overall pick become edge rusher Will Anderson while Arizona settled for left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. at No. 6.

Harrison was supposed to be different: the heir to Larry Fitzgerald and the franchise-changing weapon Kyler Murray never had. Instead, his career in Arizona ends before it truly began.
