Cincinnati upset No. 8 Texas Tech 37-24 on Saturday at Nippert Stadium behind four touchdown passes from J.C. French IV and a career-high 173 rushing yards from Cole Tabb. The loss was the first of the season for Texas Tech.

Texas Tech led 6-3 before Cincinnati scored three touchdowns in the last eight minutes of the first half. French threw scoring passes of 4 yards to Tabb, 5 yards to Malachi Henry and 2 yards to Lyviel Waters in that stretch. Cincinnati led 24-6 at halftime.

French finished with 172 passing yards. Larenzo Fenner caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and Cincinnati led 31-15. Tabb added a 58-yard touchdown run with 6:06 left in the game that made it 37-18.

A second-quarter run changes the game

Cincinnati’s defense held Texas Tech to six points in the first half and forced three turnovers in the game, according to Sports Illustrated. Texas Tech reached the Cincinnati 25-yard line or beyond on five drives and settled for field-goal attempts on each, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.

Tabb ran 16 times for 173 yards, including runs of 51 and 58 yards. It was his third game in four outings with more than 100 rushing yards.

Texas Tech rallies late, but not enough

Texas Tech cut into the lead in the third quarter. Stone Harrington kicked four field goals in the game, and Peyton Morgan returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown. Quinten Joyner scored on a 3-yard run with 59 seconds left, but it was the Red Raiders’ first offensive touchdown of the game and came too late to change the result.

Will Hammond threw for 227 yards for Texas Tech. J’Koby Williams ran for 81 yards and Joyner ran for 69 yards.

Cincinnati improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech fell to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference, its first loss since a New Year’s Day College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Orange Bowl. Cincinnati hosts No. 10 Utah next Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3:45 p.m. ET at Nippert Stadium.
