Guardians Host White Sox in Winner-Take-All ALDS Game 5 Saturday Night at Progressive Field
Cleveland forced a decisive Game 5 by winning two straight games in Chicago after falling behind 2-0 in the ALDS. Gavin Williams is set to start for the Guardians against Sean Burke, with the winner advancing to face Tampa Bay in the ALCS.
The Cleveland Guardians will host the Chicago White Sox in a winner-take-all Game 5 of the American League Division Series on Saturday night at Progressive Field, with first pitch set for 8 p.m. ET on TBS and truTV, according to USA Today and the Akron Beacon Journal.
Cleveland forced the decider by winning Games 3 and 4 in Chicago after dropping the first two games of the best-of-five series. The Guardians closed the road trip with a 9-5 win in Game 4 on Thursday, Oct. 8, according to USA Today.
How Cleveland climbed out of a 2-0 hole
In Game 4, Cleveland trailed 2-0 into the fifth inning before Patrick Bailey homered and Jose Ramirez added a two-run shot to move the Guardians in front 3-2, USA Today reported. Chicago answered to lead 4-3, but Cleveland scored six times in the sixth to go ahead 9-4 and held on despite a ninth-inning home run by Miguel Vargas.
The Beacon Journal reported that Cleveland scored at least nine runs in back-to-back playoff games for the first time since Games 3 and 4 of the 1997 World Series. Manager Stephen Vogt credited a shift in approach at the plate, saying there are no secrets left between the division rivals at this point in the series, according to the Beacon Journal. Bailey said the hitters were chasing less and taking better swings as they saw Chicago’s pitchers more often.
According to USA Today, only seven teams have completed a comeback from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five division series since that format began in 1995.
Williams and Burke get the ball, with Tampa Bay waiting
Gavin Williams will start Game 5 for Cleveland despite closing Game 4, according to the Beacon Journal. Williams, who struck out 11 in his Game 2 start, threw 18 pitches in the ninth inning Thursday on what would have been his side-session day, manager Stephen Vogt said. Sean Burke has been announced as Chicago’s Game 5 starter, according to the Beacon Journal. First pitch was listed at 8:08 p.m. ET by the Beacon Journal, with USA Today listing the broadcast window at 8 p.m. ET.
The winner advances to the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, who have already advanced and are scheduled to open the next round on Monday, Oct. 12, according to USA Today.
