Harry Styles paid tribute to Liam Payne on Friday night, debuting an unreleased song he wrote for his former One Direction bandmate during his Madison Square Garden residency, exactly two years after Payne’s death at age 31.

Styles performed “What Is Enough” alone with guitar. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, this building means a lot to me,” he told the audience, according to Consequence. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”

“I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things; I hope you haven’t, but really, it’s just about looking after each other,” he added, before introducing the track he said he wrote “for my friend about two years ago.”

The performance came on October 16, exactly two years after Payne died in Buenos Aires. The ballad speaks to grief and regret, with Styles singing at one point, “You dance until your time / now you don’t / now you never will, will you?”
Payne formed One Direction with Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik on The X Factor in 2010. The group stayed together until an indefinite hiatus began in 2016.
MSG residency continues

“What Is Enough” arrived during Styles’ 30-show “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden, part of the tour supporting his latest album, “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.” The New York run continues through October 31.
