Ukrainian Drone Wave Kills Two and Injures Nine in Moscow Region, Russian Officials Say

Russian officials said overnight Ukrainian drone attacks killed two people and injured nine in the region around Moscow. The city’s mayor said more than 650 drones were launched toward the capital, with most shot down, according to Reuters.

Overnight Ukrainian drone attacks killed two people and injured nine others in the region surrounding Moscow, the regional governor said on Tuesday, in what Russian state media described as one of the largest aerial assaults on the capital area in two years.

Governor Andrei Vorobyov said the dead were a 71-year-old man recovered from the rubble of a house and a 20-year-old man found in a nearby village, according to Reuters. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 650 drones were launched toward the city overnight and that most were downed, a figure provided by Russian officials and not independently verified.

Local authorities also said a warehouse run by the Russian e-commerce company Wildberries caught fire in the region, according to the TASS state news agency as cited by Reuters. In Domodedovo, south of Moscow, the city head said crews were working to restore electricity to villages hit during the attacks, according to Reuters.

Oil facility reported hit south of the capital

The wave also struck energy infrastructure, according to EA WorldView, which reported that drones hit the Volodarsk linear production and dispatch center near Konstantinovo, about 25 miles from downtown Moscow. Russian state media said the facility is the largest of its kind in the region. The site handles about 3 million tons of petroleum products a year and connects by pipeline to major airports around Moscow, according to EA WorldView.

The attack followed comments on Sunday by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said Kyiv would step up strikes on Russian energy targets in response to Moscow’s air campaign against Ukraine, according to EA WorldView. Both sides have increasingly aimed at energy systems as winter approaches, and each denies targeting civilians.
