The Utah Jazz will be without two-time All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. for at least six weeks after he tore the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee, the team announced Tuesday. Jackson will be re-evaluated in six weeks, the team said, and will not need surgery, according to ESPN.

The injury happened during the second quarter of Utah’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, Oct. 26. Grizzlies guard Ty Jerome was fouled while driving to the basket and fell into Jackson’s leg, USA Today reported. Jackson left the game shortly afterward, went to the locker room, and was ruled out with a right knee injury.
A second injury in the same game
The Jazz also lost forward Lauri Markkanen in the same game. Markkanen has a sprained right wrist and is listed as day-to-day, the team said. NBC Sports reported that Jackson could miss closer to eight weeks, which would put a return around or after Christmas.

Jackson was playing his seventh game for Utah after being acquired from Memphis ahead of February’s trade deadline. He had averaged 16.3 points, five rebounds, two assists and 1.3 blocks this season, while Utah started 1-3. Center Jusuf Nurkic is also out, NBC Sports reported, with a partial plantar plate tear in the second toe of his right foot, leaving Utah short in the frontcourt early in the season.
