The Eagles opened the scoring with a 40-yard field goal from Jake Elliott, then took a 10-0 lead on a touchdown run by Saquon Barkley on a direct snap, according to the Eagles’ game recap. Washington got on the board before the end of the first quarter on a 56-yard field goal from rookie kicker Drew Stevens.

Washington tied the game in the second quarter when Jayden Daniels found Stefon Diggs for a touchdown, and Stevens added a 39-yard field goal just before halftime for a 13-10 lead. The Commanders’ defense then took over: Washington recorded five sacks and nine tackles for loss in the game, and Philadelphia’s offense produced no points after halftime.

Second-half shutout and the turning point

Down 13-10 in the third quarter, Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee fumbled while in field goal range, and Dorance Armstrong knocked the ball loose before Charles Omenihu recovered it for Washington, according to the Eagles’ recap. Stevens added a short field goal to make it 16-10.

In the fourth quarter, Elliott missed a 41-yard attempt after two false-start penalties backed Philadelphia up, and the kick hit the left post. Stevens answered with a 42-yard field goal for a 19-10 lead. Rasul Douglas then intercepted McKee, and Rachaad White ran in from the 1-yard line with 1:55 left. Austin Ekeler added the two-point conversion to close the scoring at 27-10.

Daniels finished 16 of 29 for 217 yards and one touchdown, while McKee finished 23 of 34 for 212 yards and one interception, according to the Eagles’ recap. Barkley averaged 2.3 yards per carry, and Philadelphia’s longest run of the night was a 15-yard scramble by McKee.

What the coaches said

Washington head coach Dan Quinn said after the game that his team had talked about playing four full quarters. “You’ve heard me talk a lot about four quarters; I thought tonight we nailed three,” Quinn said, according to Commanders Wire. “We need all four, and that’s how it has to go down.”

Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni took responsibility for the loss. “Just need to be better everywhere,” Sirianni said, according to the Eagles’ recap. “Until we coach better, until we have better with our detail as coaches, until our players play with better detail, then we’re going to see the same results. And that falls on me.”

The loss was Philadelphia’s sixth in a row. The Eagles fell to 2-6 and to last place in the NFC East, while Washington improved to 2-4-1. Washington hosts the Los Angeles Rams next week, according to Commanders Wire.
