The match was abandoned seven minutes into stoppage time on Monday after De Miguel collapsed following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who had rushed out of his area to clear a long ball, according to Reuters. Medical staff treated De Miguel on the pitch for more than five minutes before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance, Reuters reported. The New York Post reported that he was admitted to intensive care before the club confirmed his death.

In a statement, the club said it was broken with pain and unable to believe the news. The club said the family of De Miguel thanked people for their support and asked that their privacy be respected.

Investigation and tributes

The New York Post reported that Spanish police opened an investigation into the incident for possible involuntary manslaughter and that prosecutors will be involved. Judicial authorities in the Canary Islands said the inquiry was routine procedure, since any non-natural death under Spanish law automatically sets off an investigation, according to Reuters as cited by the Post. Owono was given a red card for the play, the Post reported.

The Spanish Football Federation postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, and clubs across Spanish soccer paid tribute in statements, the Post reported. LaLiga president Javier Tebas said he was deeply saddened by the death and offered condolences to the family, teammates and the club. FC Andorra sent condolences, and Andorra president Gerard Pique wrote on social media, “I am sorry with all my heart. Rest in peace Jesus.”

De Miguel came up through the youth system at Leganes and played for Inter de Madrid, Fuenlabrada, Union Adarve and Navalcarnero in the lower divisions of Spanish soccer, according to the Post. He helped Castellon win promotion to the second division in the 2023-24 season, when he scored 16 goals, and he joined Tenerife in the summer of 2025, helping the club reach LaLiga 2 last season.
