Gaza ceasefire hits one year, with little to show

A year after the U.S.-brokered Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, more than 100 humanitarian organizations say the truce exists in name only. Human Rights Watch says Israeli forces have killed at least 1,400 Palestinians and wounded 4,881 during the ceasefire year, while aid volumes remain far below required levels and reconstruction has not begun.

Israeli fire killed at least two Palestinians in southern Gaza on Monday, health officials said. Israel says Hamas violated the deal by rearming; Hamas denies it.

Trump’s energy ceasefire lasts hours

Russia struck Ukrainian power plants within hours of the energy ceasefire President Trump announced between the two countries. Stocks drift as earnings season opens

Blurred stock market trading floor with rows of monitors showing stock charts in blue light

U.S. stocks ended Monday nearly flat on the slowest trading day of 2026. The S&P 500 fell 0.06% to 7,807 and the Nasdaq dropped 0.44% as chipmakers slid on a memory-chip breakthrough from China’s CXMT. Investors waited for bank earnings on Tuesday and Wednesday’s CPI print, while energy stocks hit records as oil rallied.

House rebukes Trump on Canada tariffs

The House voted 219-211 to condemn U.S. tariffs on Canada, with six Republicans defying the president after he warned dissidents would “seriously suffer” in their re-election bids. The measure goes to the Senate, which has twice voted to block the Canada tariffs.

Trump is expected to veto it. Retiring Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said members of Congress “cannot & should not outsource our responsibilities.”
