Abhishek Sharma scored 113 off 38 balls, including a century off 35 balls, as India chased down 199 in 13.2 overs to beat New Zealand by six wickets in Wellington and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20 series.

India sealed the five-match T20 series against New Zealand with two matches left on Tuesday, after Abhishek Sharma scored 113 off 38 balls in a six-wicket win in Wellington.

Chasing 199, India finished in 13.2 overs with 40 balls left, taking a 3-0 lead that New Zealand cannot match. Sharma reached his fifty off 15 balls and his century off 35 balls, hitting 11 sixes and nine fours before Kyle Jamieson dismissed him for 113.

A fast start set up the chase

Sharma opened with 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and the pair scored 26 runs off the first over, bowled by Jacob Duffy. India reached 64 without loss after three overs and 118 without loss after the six-over powerplay. Sooryavanshi scored 45 off 19 balls, with four sixes and four fours, before Matthew Fisher dismissed him in the eighth over. India were 156 for one after eight overs.

The eighth over also produced an unusual pause. According to CricTracker, the on-field umpires were unsure of the ball count during Fisher’s over and asked the third umpire to confirm it after five legal deliveries, before the sixth legal ball was bowled.

New Zealand’s 198 was passed with room to spare

New Zealand had posted 198 for three after batting first. Daryl Mitchell finished unbeaten on 89 off 52 balls, Finn Allen scored 40 off 25 balls and Bevon Jacobs scored 39 off 23 balls. Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy took one wicket each for India. Jamieson took two wickets, while Fisher and Mitchell Santner took one each.
