Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday as Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, to end the hosts’ unbeaten start to the La Liga season.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the 41st minute when a low cross from Yan Diomande struck Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance and ricocheted off the French forward into the net, past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Barcelona leveled in the second half when Raphinha finished a pass from Pedri into the far corner, giving the defending champions a chance to take control of the match.

A late winner and a 100-goal mark

Mbappe won it in the 87th minute. Jude Bellingham started the move, Eduardo Camavinga supplied the pass, and Mbappe finished from close range. The goal was his 100th for Real Madrid in his 116th appearance for the club, making him the 24th player to reach 100 goals for the club and the fourth-fastest to do it.

The loss was Barcelona’s second in a row in all competitions, after a Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, and it ended an 11-match league winning streak at the start of the season. It also ended a run of three years without an away win for Madrid in the Catalan capital, and it stopped Barcelona from becoming the first team to win its opening 10 league matches in a campaign.

Three points off the top

Barcelona still lead La Liga, with Atletico Madrid second, two points behind the leaders, and Real Madrid three points behind them. The win gives Madrid and the other contenders reason to believe the title race is open.

Mbappe’s brace came a day before the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, where his scoring record this season gives him a strong case among the contenders.
