A 39-year-old Sarasota man faces five counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer after authorities say he fired at deputies outside his home early Sunday, and a deputy shot him multiple times.

Casey King was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The confrontation followed a shooting reported at 12:19 a.m. on Oct. 11 in the McDonald’s parking lot at Bee Ridge and Cattlemen roads in Sarasota. No injuries were reported there, and the suspect left before law enforcement arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Standoff at the suspect’s home

Deputies determined that King had returned to his home at 4818 Hoyer Drive and took positions around the residence. A deputy made several announcements from a marked vehicle with its siren activated, directing King to surrender and leave the house, according to the agency.

King then opened fire on deputies in front of the home, the Sheriff’s Office said. A deputy returned fire, striking King multiple times. Deputies took him into custody before he was transported to the hospital.

Charges expected to grow

In addition to the five counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, the Sheriff’s Office said additional charges related to the McDonald’s parking lot shooting are expected. The investigation remains ongoing.
