Canadian Writer Anne Carson Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
Canadian poet and classicist Anne Carson, 76, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for a genre-blending body of work that brings classical Greek literature into contemporary poetry, verse novels and translation.
Canadian poet, essayist and classicist Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm on Thursday, according to Reuters and CNN.
The Academy cited Carson for a bold and inventive body of work shaped by dialogue with the classical tradition, Reuters reported. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, about $1.2 million, according to both Reuters and CNN.
A writer between the ancient and the modern
Carson, 76, is known for writing that moves between verse, prose, essay, dialogue and translation, according to Reuters. Her work is heavily influenced by classical Greek literature and ranges from opera libretti and literary criticism to verse novels, including the 1998 book that first brought her wide attention.
CNN reported that Carson has taught at colleges in the United States and Canada and is known for books in which ancient and modern material sit side by side. Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said most of her production sits at the meeting point of a philologist’s attention to words and a poet’s search for new meaning, according to CNN.
Reuters pointed to a 2019 performance piece that pairs the Helen of Troy story with Marilyn Monroe as an example of how Carson reworks classical material. CNN noted that she learned of the award while in Iceland, where, according to Academy permanent secretary Ingrid Carlberg, she had been listening to the wind.
Fourth prize announced this week
Literature is the fourth Nobel category announced this week, after medicine, physics and chemistry, CNN reported. The Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced on Friday, followed by the economics prize on Oct. 12.
Last year’s literature prize went to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, according to Reuters. With Thursday’s announcement, Carson joins a list of past recipients that Reuters noted includes Alice Munro and Ernest Hemingway.
