Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, scoring twice in the second half after a scoreless first half in which United had the better chances. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 50th minute, and Cole Palmer doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Lisandro Martinez was sent off.

The first half ended 0-0, but United could have led. Matheus Cunha had a headed goal ruled out for offside, and Estevao also had a goal disallowed for offside. United led the expected-goals count 1.01 to 0.28 at halftime, according to NBC Sports, which carried live coverage of the match.

Romeo Lavia won the ball in midfield and set Rogers free, and Rogers ran through the middle of the United defense before chipping goalkeeper Senne Lammens to make it 1-0. NBC Sports reported that Martinez and Harry Maguire failed to stop the run.

The second goal followed a video review. Martinez was shown a second yellow card and sent off for a foul on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area, and Palmer converted the penalty. The goal was Palmer’s 50th in the Premier League, according to NBC Sports.

Reaction and what comes next

United manager Michael Carrick said he did not feel let down by Martinez’s red card and said United could have led by one or two goals at halftime. Asked whether he would still be in charge for United’s Champions League game against Roma on Tuesday, Carrick answered, “Yes.” Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said, “We struggled at times but it feels good to get the three points, to get a serious performance.”

The win moved Chelsea level with Brighton on 16 points in third place, behind on tiebreakers, according to NBC Sports. United, the report noted, could finish the weekend in the relegation zone. United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET and then host Aston Villa on Sunday, November 8. Chelsea visit Sunderland on Sunday, November 8.
