Florida State Fires Head Coach Mike Norvell After Third Straight Loss
Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday after a 36-24 loss to Clemson dropped the Seminoles to 3-5, according to ESPN's Andrea Adelson. Norvell went 41-39 over seven seasons, including a 13-0 regular season in 2023.
Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, ending a seven-season run that reached a high point with an unbeaten regular season in 2023 and then slid, with a 2-10 finish in 2024 and a losing record so far this season.
The move came after the Seminoles lost 36-24 to Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium, their third straight loss. Florida State fell to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

A tenure that peaked in 2023
Norvell went 41-39 overall and 23-30 in ACC play at Florida State. In 2023, the Seminoles went 13-0 in the regular season and won the ACC championship, but were left out of the College Football Playoff after quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury against North Alabama.

The next season brought a sharp fall. Florida State entered 2024 ranked No. 10, opened with three straight losses, and finished 2-10. Norvell overhauled the roster and coaching staff in the offseason, and the Seminoles started the 2025 season 3-0, including a Week 1 win over Alabama. Florida State kept him after that season, giving him one more year to turn the program around.
This season started with a win over New Mexico State in Week 0, followed by a loss to SMU in Week 1, the third straight year Florida State lost its ACC opener. The Seminoles also lost to Miami and have now lost eight straight rivalry games, according to FSU Wire.

A buyout near $47 million
Florida State reportedly owes Norvell roughly $47 million after he signed a contract extension ahead of the 2024 season. That figure would be the third-largest buyout in college football history, depending on whether the sides reach a settlement and on the offset language in the deal, according to FSU Wire.
