Netflix Orders ‘Stranger Things’ Prequel ‘Other Worlds,’ Set in 1955 Nevada, for 2028
The live-action prequel will take the franchise to Marion, Nevada, in 1955, years before the events of the original series, with Kate Trefry as showrunner and Joe Wright directing the first three episodes.
Netflix has ordered a live-action prequel to Stranger Things, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, for a 2028 premiere. The company announced the order on Friday, Nov. 6, as part of Stranger Things Day, the annual celebration of the fictional date Will Byers disappeared in the original series.
The series is set in 1955 in Marion, Nevada, decades before the events of the original show. A teaser released with the announcement is dated April 19, 1955, and shows an abandoned bicycle near a restricted area at night, with a small military base glowing in the distance.

Matt and Ross Duffer co-created the series with Kate Trefry, a writer on the original show and on the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Trefry will serve as writer and showrunner. Joe Wright will direct the first three episodes and serve as an executive producer.

A story set before Henry Creel became Vecna
The series will explore events leading up to Henry Creel’s exposure to the otherworldly substance that gave him his powers and turned him into Vecna. Matt Duffer has said the spinoff will explain a rock that a young Henry Creel finds in a scientist’s briefcase in the Nevada caves, an object introduced in The First Shadow and seen in the fifth season of Stranger Things.
“We’ve been dreaming of ‘Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure’ for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” the Duffer brothers said in a statement. “We can’t wait for you to see what they’re cooking up. It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains.”

Shawn Levy of 21 Laps is also an executive producer, along with Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis. Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico. No cast has been announced.
Other Worlds will be the fourth project in the Stranger Things universe, after the original series, the animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 and the stage production The First Shadow. The original series, which began in 2016 and concluded at the end of 2025, became one of Netflix’s most successful series. The prequel was first reported to be in development in 2022. The Duffer brothers are executive producing the project under their Upside Down Pictures banner as part of their overall deal with Paramount, following the end of their Netflix deal in April 2026.
