Sporttrade Receives CFTC Registrations to Enter Prediction Markets After Exiting Sports Betting
Sporttrade received Designated Contract Market and Derivatives Clearing Organization registrations from the CFTC on Tuesday, clearing the former state sportsbook operator to enter the prediction market industry as an exchange and clearing venue.
Sporttrade said Tuesday it received Designated Contract Market and Derivatives Clearing Organization registrations from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, clearing the company to enter the prediction market industry as an exchange and clearing venue. The CFTC regulates derivatives markets in the United States.
Chief executive Alexander Kane said in a statement that the registrations were a full-circle moment for the company, which was founded on the idea that sports markets should have the same market structure and regulatory integrity as traditional financial markets.
From state sportsbooks to a national exchange
Sporttrade previously offered sports betting in New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa and Virginia. It exited those five markets in June 2026 after applying in May to move into regulated prediction markets, and its platform has stayed dormant since then. It is now taking waitlist sign-ups and plans to roll out its exchange and clearing services in phases, starting with selected liquidity providers.

The company plans to provide infrastructure for brokers, traders and other market participants. Social sportsbook Fliff plans to route its users’ trades through Sporttrade’s exchange once it receives regulatory approval, according to Covers.
A crowded field
Sporttrade joins a field that includes Kalshi, Polymarket, FanDuel Predicts and DraftKings Predictions, according to Covers. When Sporttrade launched in 2022, the sports event contract market was far less developed than it is now, and CFTC-regulated exchanges such as Kalshi and Crypto.com have since expanded their sports offerings. Kane said the company aims to offer tight spreads, deep liquidity and market infrastructure to broker intermediaries and traders.
