The Morning Briefing: October 7, 2026
Isaias strengthens toward a Gulf hurricane landfall, Trump weighs a federal gas tax suspension, markets await Fed minutes, Kagan and Soai win the Nobel Chemistry prize, the Supreme Court weighs Boulder's climate suit, and Messi bids farewell to Argentina.
Good morning. A strengthening Gulf storm leads the day, with Washington focused on fuel prices, markets waiting on the Federal Reserve, and a full slate of science and sports headlines from overnight.
Isaias strengthens in the Gulf, hurricane landfall expected late Friday
Tropical Storm Isaias formed early Wednesday in the southwestern Gulf and is forecast to rapidly strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday, then reach high-end Category 2 strength before landfall on the northern Gulf Coast late Friday into early Saturday. Forecasters put the center about 580 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River on Wednesday morning, moving east-northeast, with a turn north expected as the storm passes north of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Florida has declared a state of emergency for 25 counties from the western Panhandle into the Big Bend, and hurricane and storm surge watches are expected for parts of the Louisiana-to-Florida coast. Forecasters warn of dangerous winds, storm surge and 3 to 6 inches of rain, with higher totals possible. Read our full Isaias coverage.
Trump weighs suspending the federal gas tax as fuel prices stay high
President Donald Trump said Tuesday his administration is considering suspending the federal gasoline tax, a step that would require action by Congress. The comments followed an executive order expanding access to tax-exempt diesel and come as gasoline and diesel prices remain well above year-ago levels ahead of the November midterms.
The federal levy is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel, and it funds highway and bridge work. Several states have already moved on their own suspensions. Read the full report.
Markets steady at records as investors await Fed minutes
U.S. stock futures were little changed early Wednesday after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq set fresh records on Tuesday. Brent crude held above $100 a barrel and the 10-year Treasury yield hovered near its highest levels since 2002, keeping inflation and energy costs at the center of the trading day.
Investors will parse minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting later Wednesday for clues on the October decision. Futures markets put the chance of a rate hike this month at roughly one in five, down sharply from a week earlier, after September hiring came in far weaker than expected. Fed officials including Christopher Waller, Neel Kashkari and Alberto Musalem are also scheduled to speak.
Kagan and Soai win the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday to Henri Kagan of France and Kenso Soai of Japan for work on non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. The academy credited research that helped chemists build mirror-image molecules more reliably, with wide use in pharmaceuticals, flavors, scents and new materials.
The two will share the 12 million Swedish crown prize. The chemistry award follows this week’s medicine prize for optogenetics pioneers Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, and the physics prize to Francis Halzen for IceCube neutrino discoveries.
Supreme Court weighs Boulder climate lawsuit against oil companies
The Supreme Court heard arguments this week in Boulder County’s bid to hold Exxon Mobil and Suncor responsible under Colorado law for local climate costs. The companies, backed by the Trump administration, argue federal law bars state-court claims tied to interstate and global emissions.
Justices questioned both sides on the flood of similar suits that could follow a Boulder win and on decades of precedent around interstate pollution. A ruling for the companies could end dozens of comparable cases nationwide. Read our court coverage.
Messi says farewell to Argentina; Dodgers move within one win of the NLCS
Lionel Messi closed his 21-year Argentina career Tuesday night in Buenos Aires, scoring once and assisting on the other two goals in a 3-0 friendly win over Benin at the Monumental. The 39-year-old finished with 126 international goals in 208 appearances, including a World Cup title and two Copa América crowns. Read the farewell report.
In the baseball playoffs, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 3-1 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 NLDS lead behind Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and can advance with a win Wednesday. The Division Series continues across both leagues today, with the White Sox, Rays and Brewers also holding series leads. Read the Dodgers-Braves recap.
