Trump to Award Science and Technology Medals to Musk, Brin, Huang, Su, Dell and Nadella at Oct. 8 Summit
President Donald Trump is set to present the National Medal of Science to Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su on Oct. 8, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to Michael Dell and Satya Nadella, at a science summit in Washington.
President Donald Trump is set to award the nation’s top science and technology medals to six technology executives on Thursday, Oct. 8, at a science summit at the Institute of Peace in Washington, according to USA TODAY.
The National Medal of Science recipients are Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Advanced Micro Devices chief executive Lisa Su, according to USA TODAY. The National Medal of Technology and Innovation will go to Dell chief executive Michael Dell and Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella, according to USA TODAY. The White House said the honorees are helping keep the United States at the front of global innovation, according to a statement from assistant press secretary Liz Huston reported by USA TODAY.
Ceremony follows last week’s AI accord
The awards come a week after Trump met technology executives at the White House to sign a voluntary accord on developing artificial intelligence safely, with participating companies pledging internal controls over how their systems behave, according to USA TODAY. Trump has urged companies to regulate themselves and has resisted calls for a slower pace, according to USA TODAY. The summit itself grew out of a July report from White House science and technology policy director Michael Kratsios that called for putting individual scientists ahead of legacy institutions and preparing the federal research system for the AI era, according to USA TODAY.
Honorees’ ties to the administration
USA TODAY noted that nearly all of the recipients, or their companies, have contributed to Trump’s campaign, inauguration fund or the White House ballroom project. Musk gave $291 million in support of Trump and Republican candidates in the 2024 cycle, the largest total by an individual donor that cycle, according to OpenSecrets figures cited by USA TODAY. Michael Dell and his wife, Susan Dell, pledged and donated $6.25 billion to the Trump Accounts child savings program, and Microsoft donated $10 million to the ballroom project, according to USA TODAY.
