Two-Time Major Champion Jon Rahm to Leave LIV Golf, Lawyer Tells Bankruptcy Court

Jon Rahm will leave LIV Golf after rejecting the terms of the league's proposed relaunch, his lawyer told a federal bankruptcy judge on Oct. 7, dealing the Saudi-backed breakaway circuit the loss of one of its biggest stars as it tries to emerge from bankruptcy.

Two-time major champion Jon Rahm is leaving LIV Golf, his lawyer told a federal bankruptcy judge on Wednesday, in a major setback for the breakaway league as it tries to relaunch without funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, according to the Daily Caller.

Rahm’s attorney, John Beck, told U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Michael B. Kaplan in New Jersey that his client had reviewed the proposed terms of the league’s relaunch, known as LIV 2.0, and found them unacceptable, according to the Daily Caller, citing ESPN. Beck said Rahm will not take part in the relaunched series, the report said.

Separation talks, and an open question about 2027

Rahm and LIV Golf are working on a separation agreement and hope to complete it by Oct. 15, Beck said, according to the Daily Caller. Where Rahm will play in 2027 is not yet known, the report said. Sky Sports News also reported Wednesday that Rahm would quit the league over the relaunch terms.

Rahm’s departure removes one of the most accomplished players to have joined LIV since the circuit launched, and it raises the question of whether he could eventually return to the PGA Tour, which would have to decide what fines or other conditions to attach to any comeback, the Daily Caller reported.
